If your dad does not need to exchange documents with MS Office users, I would recommend to install LibreOffice alongside MS Office and encourage your dad to play with the first one a bit. Excel is still not capable of any serious data crunching or scientific computations anyway, so it doesn't matter that much in the end. On the other hand, Word has many features that makes creating ephemera more pleasant in it than in Writer.Ĭalc is quite comparable with Excel for beginners and intermediate users, but at advanced levels Excel turns out superior (creating pivot tables is way more pleasant, there is proper tab-completion and in-line help, Evaluate Formula is god-send). Word is missing proper page styles and template management (link between document and template is mostly broken upon document creation, which means you have to polish template before creating any documents) it's Master Document feature never worked as advertised and it's usage is generally discouraged working with list styles is PITA and there is not a single person in entire world who managed to master table styles logic. Personally, I find Writer better than Word for creating long, structured documents. Writer is definitely the most polished application in LibreOffice suite. Unfortunately, you have not said anything about tasks your dad performs in MS Office. It's matter of which one is better suited to your (yours dad) primary use-cases. Neither is objectively and generally better than another.
